What do you normally pay for this car? Do these have an open diff(google says they do)? Also do you want an LSD for rallycross? If so, would a welded diff do?

lol, no, a welded diff for rallycross is not exactly what you're looking for :)
A LSD would be great though :)

Pretty sure some trims had an LSD, but i'm too lazy to look it up right now. $1.5-2K is decent for one in working order, any less be suspicious.

I am trying to get a plan together for next year! It will be rallycrossing on a budget! A 1.5 way diff would be great, but those are expensive, a welded diff acts like a spool. . . which I guess is better than a open right?

I am just gonna assume that was meant for me cause you know, everything revolves around me!
If that is the price for pretty good ones, then I am set to go rotary for the rallycross! I bet I could even find one of the optional LSDs for fairly cheap, that is if they had an option.

Yeah it was meant for you, what can I say, kinja on a phone.

Also, enjoy your first clutch job
Yes that's a single 54mm nut torqued to 300ft-lbs which holds the flywheel on.

Oh sweet jebus. I am gonna have to use a 10 foot pole to touch this one. . .
![]() 08/01/2014 at 03:04 |

Actually you'll need a 1 inch drive impact gun capable of about 4-500 ft lbs (its red locktighted from the factory) :)
A 10 foot pole will just turn over the engine, and you can't stick a sock into one cylinder to lock the engine like you can on a conventional engine...

So what you are trying to tell me is that it is impossible. My friends dad is a mechanic and his garage has an impact gun, maybe I can convince him to let us use it.
I have never worked on a car before(besides the exhaust on the FRS and oil changes and stuff). Dis is gonna be fun!

One of my buddies recently tackled this (he has an 86 FC) it took him about two weeks total.
Honestly though, with the proper tools it doesn't seem so bad (probably on par with FR-S spark plugs)

The real question is, is how hard is a rotary to work on. I mean it has like 3 moving parts, so it can't be THAT bad.
![]() 08/01/2014 at 03:21 |

EASY
lots of people able to do their own rotary rebuilds
![]() 08/01/2014 at 03:23 |

Fantastic! Now everything else will be the hard part, but hey we all have to start somewhere.

like your frequent ( and I mean FREQUENT) shock replacement? Rally is about as close as you can come to torture testing a vehicles suspension.
![]() 08/01/2014 at 03:40 |

That's why it isn't going to be a DD! A lthough, some rallycross courses look fairly smooth. Hopefully parts are cheap and fairly common, otherwise I might have to look else where for a rallyx car.

VW Jetta, you go to any junk yard in the continental US and find 4-5 compatible parts cars on hand. Plus FWD = Rallycross perfection :)
![]() 08/01/2014 at 03:50 |

FWD is no fun drive! I am going RWD for a reason!!
![]() 08/01/2014 at 03:56 |
|
Have you driven FWD hard in the dirt? It's almost perfect. Nice balance between understeer and lift off oversteer, using the handbrake with throttle inputs to point the car in just the right direction (thus giving independent control of front and rear slip), 90 percent of the grip of AWD with 50% the drivetrain weight.
![]() 08/01/2014 at 04:12 |

I haven't driven anything on the dirt! So I have no point of reference. Eitherway, I am there for slidey slidey dirt autocross! I will also accept AWD vehicles if not enough RWD options are around. I don't know my goal is RWD, if no good options then AWD, if no good AWD options then FWD. I am part of the RWD master race.
![]() 08/01/2014 at 04:26 |

As am I (I'd also take RWD over anything else for nearly any situation) I'm just saying FWD takes a different driving style and can be just as rewarding to master (I might be biased here, the only FWD car I've thoroughly hooned on dirt was a rabbit GTI, and it was bliss). I'm an avid AWD hater though.

Are you and me best friends or something?! I've been looking at RX-7s for sale also.
Difference is I have no space for one.

It took me a week to get that fucking nut off the first time. Finally got by alternating a MAP torch and a huge Ingersoll Rand impact wrench for about 30 minutes, after presoaking with PB Blaster.

Yes, yes FWD is usually faster. I run stock RWD and it is always the slowest class. It is still the most fun class though.
Also, in my local region a mod rwd miata has taken FTD before.

Do it!
![]() 08/01/2014 at 13:41 |

Neither do I! It is gonna have to sit outside. . .

Two cars already sit outside my house....
![]() 08/02/2014 at 00:27 |

I think the real question is: how long can you go without putting a 1uz in
![]() 08/02/2014 at 00:29 |
|
1UZ, W58 transmission, some diff(I have no idea)! BOOM! FC 1UZ sex!
![]() 08/02/2014 at 00:45 |
|
ford 8.8 diff! because live rear axle!
also cheap and everywhere. Pretty sure most 8.8s would poke on an FC so there's an excuse to fender flare!

Is this not the most Jalop car ever right now?
![]() 08/02/2014 at 00:58 |

Screw diesel wagons, Maz-yoda con Fordo is now as Jalop as you can get

my friend just bought one for 1400. a 1987 s4. He is planing on doing a turbo swap. and then eventually making it a missile. Ill show you pics whenever he gets it street legal. He says its got an LSD iirc...
![]() 08/03/2014 at 01:10 |

We aren't gonna be doing a turbo or anything fancy. Maybe a loud exhaust, but mostly just rally wheels and tires! Also drift missle?
